How to Burn Bakhoor

Bakhoor is an Arabian incense traditionally made from Agarwood (Oud) or other ingredients combined with fragrant perfume oils. Bakhoor’s long lasting and pleasant aroma makes it an excellent choice for home use, or for perfuming large rooms/venues.

Did you know there are three ways you can burn your favorite Arabian incense using an incense burner?

Charcoal Burner

Using the traditional charcoal burning method can be a great way to enjoy bakhoor in its purest form. The sensual and intimate experience is unmatched by quicker techniques, which lack the sensory pleasure and elemental feeling of charcoal.

The coal used for this method is a special type that doesn’t produce smoke, except for a small amount when first ignited. Rather, it is the fragrant bakhoor which releases a rich smoke used to scent any space.

What You Will Need:

  1. Bakhoor (Arabian Incense)
  2. Incense Burner
  3. Charcoal Disc
  4. Matchstick or Lighter
  5. Tongs

Caution: The Incense Burner and its contents get very hot. Keep the Incense Burner with hot coal away and out of the reach of pets, children, and any flammable material (curtains, upholstery, etc). Never leave a hot incense burner unattended or unsupervised. Only dispose of the coal when you are sure that it is completely cold and extinguished.

Step 1: Place a Charcoal Disc into your Incense Burner.

Step 2: Apply flame to the Charcoal Disc with a matchstick or lighter until you see sparks self-igniting and traversing the coal.

Use caution when handling a Charcoal Incense Burner once the coal is lit. Do not directly touch the hot coal. Use tongs to safely handle the hot coal and incense.

Step 3: Wait for the top of the Charcoal Disc to turn gray. The gray soot-like ash forms after a while, and indicates the Charcoal is hot and ready.

Step 4: Crumble or place a piece of Bakhoor on top of the hot Charcoal Disc safely using tongs, and experience your exotic Bakhoor fragrance.

Step 5: When you are done burning Bakhoor with your Charcoal Incense Burner, cover the Incense Burner with a ceramic dish to extinguish the coal disc.

Keep the covered Charcoal Incense Burner away and out of the reach of pets, children, and any flammable material (curtains, upholstery, etc). Never leave an incense burner unattended or unsupervised until you are sure the coal is completely cold.

Step 6: Dispose of any ash or soot, and used Bakhoor.

Only dispose of the coal when you are sure that it is completely cold.

Electric Burner

While lacking the sensual or ‘elemental’ feel of charcoal, burning bakhoor with an electric incense burner has the advantage of being fast and convenient. For those seeking an easier and quicker method without compromising the luxurious aroma of bakhoor.

What You Will Need:

  1. Bakhoor (Arabian Incense)
  2. Electric Incense Burner
  3. Electrical Wall Outlet or Power
  4. Tongs
  5. Optional: Metal Cup

Caution: The Incense Burner and its contents get very hot. Keep the Electric Incense Burner away and out of the reach of pets, children, and any flammable material (curtains, upholstery, etc). Never leave a hot incense burner unattended or unsupervised.

Step 1: Place your Electric Incense Burner near a wall outlet or other source of power.

If your model of Electric Incense Burner comes with a switch, ensure it is in the ‘off’ position.

Step 2: If desired, place a small metal cup onto the metal incense burning plate. This optional step helps keep the hot plate clean and presentable.

Step 3: Plug your Electric Incense Burner into a source of power. If your model has a switch, turn it on.

Step 4: Wait for the hot plate to heat up.

Use caution when handling a powered Electric Incense Burner. Do not directly touch the hot plate once powered on. Use tongs to safely place or handle any incense on the hot plate.

Step 5: Crumble or place a piece of Bakhoor on top of the hot plate or metal cup safely using tongs, and experience your exotic Bakhoor fragrance.

Step 6: When you are done burning Bakhoor, turn off and unplug your burner from its source of power. Be sure to let the hot plate cool down.

Keep the Electric Incense Burner away and out of the reach of pets, children, and any flammable material (curtains, upholstery, etc). Never leave a hot incense burner unattended or unsupervised.

Step 7: Once cooled down completely, dispose of any used Bakhoor in the small metal cup or on the hot plate.

Charcoal or Electric: Which One is Right For Me?

Charcoal and electric burners are both great for burning bakhoor, but each has their own advantages and disadvantages.

Unique Features

Complexity to Use

Portability

Disadvantages

Charcoal Sensual, Intimate Experience More Involved Process to Burn Use Anywhere without Cords or Hassle Requires Coal Disc for Each Session
Standard Electric Only On/Off Modes for Simple, Easy Use Quickly Releases Incense Requires Wall Outlet No Temperature Control
Regulator Electric Can Burn Resins, Oils, other Types of Incense Standard Burners Can’t Convenient Temp. Control and Timer for Effortless Fragrance - Bigger than Standard Electric, Coal Burners

Benefits of Charcoal

Charcoal is the go-to method for burning Bakhoor, especially in the Middle East. The crackling sound of a coal being lit and its radiant, natural warmth are sensations that electric burners can’t replicate. It is also the most portable method without cords or hassle, making it a wonderful option for not just scenting a room/house, but even for perfuming clothes!

However, this method consumes a charcoal disc for each bakhoor session, and lighting the coal can take more time if a low-quality coal is used. We recommend using a premium quick-lighting bakhoor coal when using a charcoal burner.

Benefits of Electric

Electric burners excel in their unmatched speed and convenience. No need to for coal discs, only a wall outlet and your favorite bakhoor. And while lacking the natural sensations of coal, electric burners come in a wide variety of stylish shapes and sizes, making them excellent show-pieces!

And for added convenience, electric regulator burners come with a built-in shut-off timer and more precise temperature control. This gives regulator burners the unique ability to burn not only Arabian bakhoor, but also other incenses, resins, and oils when using a metal cup.

The ability to toggle a shut-down timer for up to 5 hours (in 1 hour increments) makes electric regulator burners one of the most convenient and feature-packed types on the market!
